Urban Foli Djembe Orchestra Performing Arts Claimed

Urban Foli is a musical theater performance group that expresses traditional African drumming and dance bridged with contemporary sound and movements in support of all peoples in the community.

Mission is to preserve traditional music and culture; to continue the legacy of percussion and movement; to promote the fusion of mainstream contemporary music and culture within traditional African Diasporic rhythm and sound and to expose as many people as possible to these traditions, specifically the youth.

Urban Foli offers everyone a deep cultural exploration of inner personal heritage found within the broad global perspective. We believe that the most strategic way to help bring positive change to those most vulnerable yet promising in our city, our youth, is to partner with other artists who have demonstrated long term commitments towards peace, love and juvenile justice in Baltimore City and beyond.

COMMUNITY CLASSES

Greenmount West Community Center
1634 Guilford Ave, Lanvale St Entrance

Required Instrument: Djembe or Dun Dun Drum (rentals available)

Students will learn:

• how the instruments are constructed;

• how to listen and learn specific technical rhythms and sound;

• gain a deeper understanding of the healing powers of this instrument.

 Participants will use what they learn to become active drummers and players in final performances.
